ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — An inmate at an Anson Correctional Institution who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, officials said.

According to authorities, the inmate was in her late 40s and had pre-existing medical conditions.

She was hospitalized on Nov. 10 and tested positive for the virus a few days later. Her condition worsened and she died on Wednesday, officials said.

“Her death is saddening, and we continue to work hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.”

Authorities said the inmates identity will not be released.
