19-year-old arrested after bystander caught in crossfire during drive-by shooting in Salisbury

SALISBURY, N.C. — A 24-year-old bystander was hurt after being caught in the crossfire during a drive-by shooting Monday morning in Salisbury, police said.

Gunfire erupted around 10 a.m. at the intersection of South Main Street and Mooresville Road, near Southern Motors.

According to police, a silver Cadillac CTS with three men wearing black masks was passing a silver Jeep Cherokee on Mooresville Road, headed toward South Main Street, when the rear passenger of the Cadillac hung out the window and fired at the Jeep.

The Jeep was struck several times but did not stop. It’s unclear why the Jeep was targeted.

The 24-year-old man was next to a black pickup truck at Southern Motors when he was struck in the leg by a bullet. He was taken to Rowan Regional where he was treated and released, police said.

“He is our best worker we have out here. Always punctual, on time and willing to work,” said fellow employee Maria Rameriez.

The pickup truck at Southern Motors was also struck in the tailgate and back window.

The Cadillac fled north on Main Street and then left onto Fulton Street.

Magen Stewart lives a block away. The suspects drove down her street after the shooting.

“It’s pretty scary,” she said. “It’s very disheartening. It hurts to see such violence in this world.”

Police told Channel 9 they are committed to finding the people involved.

“We need to try to get those type of people off the street ASAP,” Sgt. Corey Brooks with Salisbury police. “We are going to try to put an end to it before it gets out of control.”

On Tuesday, police said they had arrested 19-year-old Achazyah McCombs. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
