Lockdown lifted at Independence HS, Northeast Middle after police activity in area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — School leaders say the lockdown has been lifted at Independence High School and Northeast Middle School in east Charlotte after there was police activity in the area.

The lockdown started around 10:30 a.m. Friday and was lifted around 11:30 a.m.

Officials said all students and staff were safe during the lockdown and the school day will continue.

STATEMENT SENT TO PARENTS: 

"Good morning Independence families.

This is Principal Legrand calling. The safety and security of our students and staff is important to me and my team. I want to inform you that our school has been on a lockdown for a short time this morning due to police activity in the area.

All students and staff are safe and our day will continue once the lockdown is over. Thank you for your support of Independence."

Chopper 9 SkyZoom was above the school, and we could see Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and their K-9 unit near the school.

Police could be seen in a wooded area conducting what appeared to be a search.

No other information has been released.
