CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One of Charlotte’s busiest roads is going to be widened sooner than expected.

Charlotte City Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera said the widening of Independence Boulevard will happen in 2021 instead of 2022.

Once it’s complete, Independence will have an additional toll and free lane from Wallace Lane to I-485.

“We want to address congestion issues and I personally know I sit in Independence traffic for hours and I feel like this is the way that we really have to invest in our infrastructure,” Ajmera said.

Channel 9 has followed the construction on Independence Boulevard for years. Crews have been working on interchanges at Sharon Amity and Idlewild roads for three years. It was supposed to be done in October 2016 but multiple setbacks pushed the finish date to this summer.

It’s not clear how long the widening construction will last once crews begin the project.
