E. Independence Blvd reopens hours after pedestrian hit, killed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — East Independence Boulevard near Sardis Road North was shut down for hours Thursday morning after officials said a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m and the road reopened around 10 a.m.

The closure caused major issues for drivers during rush hour.

The vehicle involved was a maroon SUV and the driver remained on the scene until officers arrived.

Kenneth Blake Crowder Jr., 61, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to maintain a lane of travel.

Officers said the pedestrian was walking with the direction of traffic in the 8200 block of Independence Boulevard when the driver of a 2009 Honda Pilot drifted to the right and struck a 21-year-old, whose name has not been released.

Police said the driver stopped and the passenger of the car called 911. Police also said it was dark and the roadway was not lighted.

Police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released the name of the person who died or what led up to the accident.

Officers also haven't said if the driver will face any charges.

Major crash detectives are conducting an investigation.
