UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County Public School students and parents got the good news this week: Prom will happen.
High school senior Rayven Williams said it’s something she’s been waiting a long time for. Prom was canceled last year, so this will be her first.

“I’m just really excited. I’m ready for May 15 to get here!” she said.
It won’t be like previous years, however. Outdoor events are being planned on school campuses. Masks and temperature checks will be required, and students will have to practice social distancing, too.
“I actually like it because … due to COVID guidelines, we can social distance properly and still be able to have fun,” Williams said.
Tahira Stalberte with UCPS thinks it’s a valuable part of the student experience.
“We just thought it was really important from a socially emotional standpoint to provide a prom for a students,” Stalberte said.
As senior class president, Williams shared a message for her classmates:
“I think we should just embrace it because everything about our senior year has been completely different, so I think we should just embrace the fact that we are going to have this semi-normal experience.”
