CHARLOTTE — An iconic painting is now on display at the Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte.
Ernie Barnes’ masterpiece, “The Sugar Shack” is on loan through June 30.
This is the first time a North Carolina museum has showcased this painting.
The Mint Museum describes it as a lively night at a Black music hall in the mid-20th century in segregated North Carolina.
It also has several other pop culture connections. The art work was featured on the cover of Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, and it could also be spotted in the opening credits of the sitcom Good Times for several seasons.
The painting is inspired by Barnes’ memory of sneaking into the Durham Armory as a preteen.
