ROCK HILL, S.C. — A Rock Hill woman will get to stay in her apartment after the complex claimed she owed thousands in unpaid rent. However, she had showed Channel 9 receipts proving that she had paid.

It’s a big update in a story we’ve followed since the beginning of the month. Several renters at the same complex were all hit with unexpected bills and eviction notices. But one woman told Channel 9′s Almiya White she was able to get it resolved.

“I am relieved. It’s like a load of stress being taken off from me,” Jasmine Milton said.

PREVIOUS STORIES:

Milton showed White the paperwork that now gives her a sense of security. Just last week, she was faced with an eviction notice for an unpaid balance. Windsor Apartments in Rock Hill claimed she owed more than $2,000.

“I was emailing them over a year,” she said. “You know, trying to sit down to have a meeting to, you know, prove that I didn’t owe this amount of money that you’re stating that I owe. Nobody will ever sit with me.”

That’s when Councilman William “Bump” Roddey got involved. He asked the complex for a meeting with himself and Milton.

“We were able to sit down and go through it with a fine-tooth comb and really figure out what was the issue,” Roddey said.

Councilman Roddey said they discovered there were “accounting mistakes.” Milton said she kept proof of every rent payment, so the complex agreed to wipe her balance.

“It was no way they can say that I owed that money because I had receipts,” she said. “I have every receipt.”

But Milton isn’t alone in her fight. Dozens of tenants reached out to Channel 9 with similar stories. And according to the York County public index records, we learned 80 tenants at Windsor Apartments faced eviction notices this year alone.

“Eighty people at one apartment complex is just an alarming number,” Roddey said.

Roddey and Milton are urging the tenants to advocate for themselves.

“Don’t just let them evict you. Or even if you have been evicted, fight them, because that’s going to go on your credit and it’s going to affect you for a long time,” Milton said.

Milton said her lease was also renewed.

White reached out to the complex again Tuesday to see if they plan to sit down with other tenants who have balances. She’s still waiting for a response.
