DILLON, S.C. — A drive home turned dangerous for a North Carolina family after a tornado touched down in front of their truck.

The Sunday family was driving home from Jacksonville, North Carolina last weekend when a tornado passed over the interstate, according to WLOS. They were able to capture the storm on camera.

“I asked Annie, my wife, to get the phone and record it just in case something happened to us,” said Michael Sunday, who was driving the truck.

It happened near Dillon, South Carolina. The video appeared to capture a funnel cloud followed by lots of debris.

“I could see some rotation in the distance and then all of a sudden out from the trees comes a tornado,” Michael Sunday said.

“We thought it was going to pick the truck up, but it didn’t, thank goodness,” Michael’s daughter, Sophie Sunday, said.

Storms swept across the Carolinas throughout the weekend as the remnants of Hurricane Delta moved through, triggering tornado warnings in parts of North and South Carolina.

The Sundays said the tornado happened quickly.

“My wife was looking at her phone trying to figure out where is it coming from, alright tornado warning, but our alerts didn’t tell us where,” Michael Sunday said.

The family said their truck did sustain some damage, but they just feel lucky to have made it out safely.

“I just thought, ‘We’re all together. If something is going to happen, then we’re all just going to be together and it’ll just be,'” Annie Sunday said.

Sophie Sunday said she believes Jesus was watching over them when the tornado touched down.
