CHARLOTTE — Commuters between uptown Charlotte and the Lake Norman area might notice a change on Interstate 77 this morning. Today marks the start of a three-year pilot program allowing “extended vehicles” to travel in the toll lanes.

Extended vehicles are defined as those with no more than two axles but measuring more than 22 feet, such as a box truck, or two-axle vehicles towing a single-axle trailer like those often used for boats or lawn-care equipment.
Those vehicles will be charged a higher rate than smaller, low-occupancy vehicles.
