The incident began shortly after 4 a.m. when the box truck ran off the right side of the roadway and collided with a concrete utility access.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the truck came to rest partially in the roadway facing the opposite direction. The driver exited the vehicle and was standing in the roadway beside it.

A Toyota passenger car traveling in the right lane of I-485 then struck the truck driver. Following the impact, the driver of the Toyota pulled over to the left shoulder.

The truck driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash caused major traffic backups during the morning response as I-485 Outer was reduced to a single lane. All lanes were fully reopened around 9:15 a.m.
