YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators said they have charged a Huntersville doctor with illegally buying oxycodone from CVS stores in Rock Hill.
They said Dr. Byron Christopher Leak was selling prescriptions for cash.
Leak is in the jail in York County charged with 15 counts of trafficking heroin.
The doctor was also arrested in May in Mecklenburg County on charges of illegally dispensing prescription drugs.
Leak voluntarily surrendered his license 10 days after that to the North Carolina Medical Board and closed down what practices he had.
“He's very concerned about this, and we've been working together to get a defense mounted,” Leak’s attorney, Rob Heroy, said.
Heroy didn’t say if Leak is cooperating with investigators, but everything suggests that he is interested in putting the allegations behind him.
Turning himself in Friday morning was a big step in that direction, Heroy said.
Leak's license was suspended in Ohio back in 2006 because he had a history of chemical dependency, use of alcohol, fentanyl and marijuana.
