Hundreds without power after winter storm brings heavy winds, rain and ice across the Carolinas

CHARLOTTE — A winter storm that made its way through the Carolinas Saturday night into Sunday has brought heavy winds, rain, and even ice to some areas.

The Charlotte area saw heavy rains throughout the night, with even a few lightning strikes reported. The high country dealt with ice and rain.

Channel 9′s Erika Jackson took the trip up the mountain to Beech Mountain, where ice has become the main issue. She left at 2 a.m. and noticed a big temperature change from when she left Charlotte.

The roads became more slick as the morning went on. Jackson could see power trucks, salt trucks, and other crews working in the area as snow is expected throughout the day.

Over a thousand power outages were reported in the Charlotte area by 7 a.m., ranging from the metro area to Fort Mill and beyond. The number of outages dipped below 500 just after 1 p.m.

In Charlotte, the rain event will linger throughout the morning. Ch. 9 meteorologist John Ahrens. But for the mountains, the snow event will start as the rain moves out.
