Hundreds in south Charlotte without power for several hours after Saturday storms

CHARLOTTE — Duke Energy was working most of Sunday to restore power outages in Mecklenburg County from Saturday night’s storms.

About 1,600 customers in south Charlotte lost electricity Saturday night; of those, about 800 in the Sharon Woods area were without power until late Sunday evening.

Jennifer Orsomarso, who lives at the Southpark Commons Apartment Homes, told Channel 9 she was in the dark since 11 p.m. Saturday.

“I can’t get things done that I wanted to get done. Like I said, the food has all gone in the garbage. I know my neighbors have had to throw their food in the garbage,” said Orsomarso.

Orsomarso said she had to throw away around $100 in food from her refrigerator.

Duke Energy said the outages were caused by fallen trees and limbs damaging their equipment.

Orsomarso said her apartment complex opened up the pools and the front lobby to let people cool off and charge their phones.
