IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A sergeant with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office died from COVID-19 complications, the sheriff announced Wednesday on social media.
Sergeant Gary Mayhorn had served with the sheriff’s office since 2003.
He was a deputy with the Civil Division and was recently sworn in as a deputy assigned with the Detention Center as a supervisor.
“Sgt. Mayhorn will be remembered as a humble, caring officer, who gave so much of himself to ensure the safety and well-being of those entrusted to his care,” the Facebook post read. “He always had a smile on his face and often an encouraging word when you saw him.”
The sheriff’s office asked others to keep Mayhorn’s family in their thoughts and prayers.
“Each of us will miss Sgt. Gary Mayhorn and his passing will leave a tremendous void,” his colleagues stated in the post.
Another law enforcement officer from our area died from COVID-19 this week. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department tweeted Tuesday that Ardrey Kell High School Resource Officer Julio Herrera had died.
Herrera had been with CMPD for 28 years.
