CONCORD, N.C. — Former NASCAR driver and race team owner Michael Waltrip, now a media figure for the sport, is looking to shake up craft beer with his namesake brand.

His Michael Waltrip Brewing Co. has invested roughly $750,000 into a Concord taproom at 7731 Gateway Lane NW — formerly Hot Shots Sports bar.

A grand opening was held on May 16.

That 8,000-square-foot taproom will pour Waltrip’s signature beers and dish up elevated, pub-style fare. It sets the stage for further expansion for the brand. Now that distribution is in place, additional taprooms are planned in Charlotte and nationwide.

“I think we’re in a great position to continue the growth, and that’s what I want to do,” Waltrip says. “I want to have a taproom here and there and people say, ‘You know I had a good beer in there and a good time.’”

He’s tapped Ken McAllister, with Elevatus Brands, to lead franchising efforts for MWB.

The goal is to have 100 locations within the next five years, with a focus on NASCAR markets.
