Housing developments among zoning changes approved by Charlotte council

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte City Council this week approved multiple rezoning petitions, clearing the way for several new housing developments throughout the city.

The largest single-family development approved will add 37 single-family townhomes to a 1.74-acre site at 3100 Selwyn Avenue. The project will replace an existing church complex operated by Selwyn United Methodist Church at Woodlawn Road, Pinehurst Place and Selwyn Avenue. The rezoning petition was filed by Woodlawn Community Fellowship Inc. According to earlier zoning documents filed with the city, the residential development is backed by longtime Charlotte real estate executive Roy Goode.

While the city planning staff found the proposal is inconsistent with the south district plan for the area targeted, it does meet the city’s general development policies, which encourage greater housing density.

Council approved the request with only Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eislet voting no. Eiselt said she wanted the city to start addressing stormwater and structural issues in advance of approving projects of such density. “If we are going to embrace a more dense city, a more livable city…we have to address the structural issues out there right now.”
