Hornets Foundation gifts $25,000 to Mecklenburg County nonprofit fighting food insecurity

Hornets Foundation gifts $25,000 to Mecklenburg County nonprofit fighting food insecurity Hugo the Hornet with the new delivery car for Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays.

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Hornets Foundation is donating $25,000 to Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays, Inc. through its annual Hunger Grant to expand the nonprofits Meals on Wheels program.

The gift will help the Mecklenburg County-based organization buy a new food delivery car.

“Delivering food to those who are unable to obtain or prepare their own meals is so important, and this vehicle will help us reach even more individuals in the Charlotte community,” said Tina Postel, CEO of Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays. “Our Meals on Wheels program is about so much more than just the food – it’s also about providing human connection to the isolated and lonely and peace of mind to their families.”

Loaves & Fishes and Friendship Trays merged in early 2021 to expand their capacity for handling food insecurity in Charlotte. The group uses a network of food pantries, home grocery delivery and meal services delivery.

Last year, more than 75,000 people were provided groceries by the nonprofit and another 120,000 received meals.

“Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays is an incredible organization that has been ensuring all residents across Charlotte have access to nutritious food for decades,” said Fred Whitfield, the Hornets president and vice chairman. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to support Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays with purchasing a new vehicle, which we hope will enable them to transport even more meals and groceries to our neighbors in need.”
