CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are conducting a death investigation Monday morning in east Mecklenburg County after a woman was found dead.
Shortly before 8 a.m., officers responded to Beckenham Drive near Arlington Church Road and Albemarle Road to help MEDIC with reports of someone who needed medical attention.
When officers got to the area, they found a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not said how she died or released her name.
CMPD said it is standard procedure for homicide detectives to conduct an investigation after any sudden or unexpected death.
Police initially called the investigation a homicide, but later told Channel 9 they were reclassifying it as a “death investigation” after collecting evidence and speaking with family members.
Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura said there was a large police presence at the scene. He said he counted at least 12 CMPD patrol cars and could see crime scene tape wrapped around one of the homes in the neighborhood.

Neighbors told Channel 9 they consider the area a “tight-knit” community and they were surprised to see such a large police scene Monday morning. They said they just want answers.
“People here know each other and just nothing like that ever happens here,” neighbor Lewis Andrews said. “Everybody’s concerned. Everybody, as you can see, is hanging around just wondering ‘What’s going on?’”
CMPD said there’s no search for a suspect right now, and they believe there’s no threat to people who live in the area.
