CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Investigators responded to the scene of a homicide Tuesday afternoon at an apartment complex in northeast Charlotte.

Detectives responded around 2 p.m. to an assault with a deadly weapon call at Magnolia Terrace Apartments on Paces Oaks Boulevard near East W.T. Harris Boulevard.

When they got there, police said they found a woman who had been shot outside the apartments. Herbrea Labonnie Keels, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see officers investigating an SUV at the scene and talking to witnesses.

Police have not said what led to the shooting, but did say they aren’t looking for any suspects.

This is the third homicide in Charlotte in 17 hours.

Police said 51-year-old John Paul Cousar was stabbed to death around 9:30 p.m. Monday near Ledson Court in northwest Charlotte. Earlier that day, another person was found dead outside of a home along Newell-Hickory Grove Road in east Charlotte. That victim has not yet been identified.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief Johnny Jennings told Channel 9 he doesn’t have an answer to why there has been so much violence lately.

“It’s unfortunate,” he said. “I wish I had the answer... the root problem we are dealing with unfortunately people are quick to resort to deadly force or pull the firearm and things get out of control.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit detective. Detective Carter is the lead detective assigned to this case. The public can also leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
