CHARLOTTE — A man has been charged with murder in a shooting that left one person dead in northeast Charlotte over the weekend.
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it happened on Tom Hunter Road on Dec. 10. A Channel 9 crew could see officers still at the scene just after 11 p.m. that day, outside Bright Coin Laundry and Cleaners off of North Tryon Street.
Police said 32-year-old Lawrence Nathaniel Green Jr. was found behind a strip mall and died at the hospital.
Through records from law enforcement and the courts, Channel 9 was able to determine Stephen Hopkins, 34, was arrested Thursday in connection to the case. He was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
In court Friday, Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura learned Hopkins was given no bond for the murder charge and a $100,000 bond for the other charge.
On Sunday, Channel 9 reporter Glenn Counts spoke with a resident who said the shooting has them worried about their safety.
“Mainly just worried about like my safety and the safety of everyone around their homes and stuff because it happens often -- not like every day -- but it happens a lot we hear gunshots around,” the resident, who did not want to be identified, said.
