CHARLOTTE — A man is dead after police said he kidnapped a woman before leading officers on a chase and shooting at them Wednesday night before turning the gun on himself in east Charlotte.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it was conducting a death investigation along Shamrock Drive, near Eastway Drive.

According to CMPD, shortly after 8:40 p.m., officers responded to a domestic violence assault call. Police learned that the suspect forced a woman into a car and fled the scene.
CMPD was quickly able to spot the suspect’s car using cameras and officers tried to get the driver to pull over but said he failed to stop and, instead, led them on a chase.
Officials told Channel 9 that during the pursuit, the suspect fired shots at officers. One CMPD vehicle was hit by gunfire, but no officers were hurt.
CMPD said none of their officers returned fire.
The car then suddenly stopped along Shamrock Drive near Eastway Drive, where officers said the suspect shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
CMPD said the woman sustained injuries from the domestic assault but that she was not hurt during the chase. She was checked out by paramedics on the scene but did not require treatment. Investigators said the two knew each other.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
