BESSEMER CITY, N.C. — Josh Self returned home from the hospital yesterday following an incident that left two of his family members dead. Now, a local Home Depot will be assisting in his transition and recovery at home.

Lori Pearson from the Gastonia Home Depot confirmed the Home Depot foundation approved grant money to fund a project to help Josh’s recovery.

“There are needs, simple things like grab bars in the bathroom,” Pearson said. “He doesn’t know what all his things are going to be right now. He's coming home to a different world so we are going to make that transition as easy as we can.”

The family told Channel Nine Josh has an ankle injury and will be using a wheelchair for about six weeks. The project will include a wheelchair ramp in the back of Josh’s home as well as a door large enough for a wheelchair.

This follows the initial incident on May 20 when Roger Self allegedly intentionally drove his Jeep into the 'Surf and Turf Lodge' in Bessemer City. Family and friends believe Roger Self is battling mental illness and believe this to be the reason for the incident.

Volunteers will begin working on the project this weekend.
