CHARLOTTE — The holiday travel rush is expected to pick up this weekend.
Traffic Team 9′s Mark Taylor learned about the best and worst times to hit the road.
AAA officials said that 90% of people traveling this holiday season will be driving so there will be a lot of vehicles on the highways. There will be 107 million people who are expected to travel by car, which is 2.5 million higher than last year. The record in 2019 was 108 million.
Thursday is the best day to travel. Leaving before 11 a.m. would be ideal and it is best to avoid traffic until 8 p.m., according to Inrex, a leading provider of traffic data.
On Friday, it is best to leave before 11 a.m. and avoid the roads between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.
On Saturday, it’s best to leave before 2 p.m. and avoid driving between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
On Sunday, drivers are encouraged to leave before noon and avoid the roads from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
On Monday, leave before 11 a.m. and avoid 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
On Christmas Eve and Christmas, don’t expect much traffic throughout the day.
