‘Hit Big’: Stanly Co. man plans to buy house for family with $750,000 lottery win

NORWOOD, N.C. — When Rogelio Aviles of Oakboro saw he won $750,000, he knew exactly what to do, North Carolina Education Lottery officials said.

“I want to buy us a house, so that we can all live together,” he told lottery officials. “Family always comes first.”

Aviles stopped at the Norwood BP on North Main Street for some snacks.

He likes to play scratch-off games and decided to try his luck with a $10 Jumbo Bucks ticket. He won enough after playing that ticket to buy another.

So, he “bought it again and hit big!”

“I’m really happy,” he said.

While scratching the “Winning Numbers” section of his ticket, he realized that the third number happened to be his lucky number: one.

“It’s just lucky,” he said.

Aviles claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Monday. After state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $530,628.

Jumbo Bucks launched in January 2018 with 16 $750,000 top prizes. Seven $750,000 prizes remain to be won
