Highway 51 in Matthews shut down after vehicle takes down pole

MATTHEWS, N.C. — All lanes of Highway 51 in Matthews were shut down for hours early Wednesday morning after police said a vehicle crashed into a utility pole.

The busy highway was blocked at Fullwood Lane and Matthews police said the wreck took down a power pole and knocked out traffic signals.

No injuries were reported and officials said Sardis Road and South Trade Street was the alternate route.

Police have not released any other details surrounding the crash, but said that the highway was reopened around 8 a.m..
