A high-profile sexual-harassment lawsuit against a former district attorney has come to an end.

Jay Gaither was the lead prosecutor in Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties for 12 years, but lost the 2014 election while entrenched in this scandal.

He reached a settlement Tuesday in the lawsuit filed against him by one of his former assistant district attorneys, Whitney Nicole Shaffer.

Details of the settlement have not been made public.

In the suit, Shaffer accused her former boss of harassing and groping her.

She said Gaither insisted she go out to dinner with him - then touched her inappropriately and over the next several days, repeatedly sent her text messages about the encounter.

Shaffer resigned a week later.

Gaither claimed she was carrying out a vendetta against him after being caught in an affair with a local defense attorney.

Gaither gained notoriety while prosecuting the Zahra Baker murder trial.
