INDIAN LAND, S.C. — The Charlotte Fire Department assisted with a high-angle rescue at a large water tank structure Tuesday in the Indian Land area.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom captured firefighters as they worked to bring a worker who had been injured to ground level safely.

It looked like the tower was in a phase of construction.

According to the Indian Land Fire Department, the worker’s leg was injured while he was working on the top of the 92-foot tower.

“Called for a high-angle box out of Charlotte. Just because of the technical rescue, we had climbers go up and tend to the workers with medical care and start the process of getting some rope systems set up,” said Indian Land Fire Chief Greg Nicholson.

Nicholson told Channel 9 that the rescue took around two hours to complete.

“It just takes a long time and a lot of manpower to get people up there. You have to climb up, get all your equipment up there, and set up a rope system to lower him down,” Nicholson explained.

Channel 9 also spoke with neighbors who were just feet away as the rescue occurred.

“I heard all the sirens. And then I came outside, and I realized they were, like, right next to me,” resident Santiago Lanza. “I was like, you know, oh, my God, you know, I was in shock, because, you know, that tower is pretty, you know, big.”

Lanza said he appreciated the efforts of first responders after witnessing what he described as an intense rescue.

“Fire trucks from everywhere, even Charlotte, I couldn’t believe it. So I’m just grateful that they came over here and they did this, you know, they took care of it as fast as they did,” Lanza explained.

It is unclear how the worker is doing following the rescue.
