Armed robbery in Union County leads to chase, crash in Charlotte neighborhood

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Investigators said four people, including two minors, are in custody after an armed robbery in Union County led to a chase and crash in a northwest Charlotte neighborhood Wednesday.

Channel 9 arrived on scene just after noon and saw a red Kia that crashed near Pleasant Grove Road and Clinton Drive.

Investigators said the incident started after two masked, armed men forced an employee at A Wireless in Indian Trail to fill a bag with mobile phones.

Deputies, who were nearby assisting with a holiday parade, responded immediately and quickly shared information on the suspects and their vehicle – a red Lexus – with surrounding law enforcement agencies, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

From the air, CMPD followed the Lexus and watched as the suspects abandoned it in a driveway on Stallings Road and started towards Charlotte in a Kia Sorento.

CMPD then attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver would not pull over. The chase ended in a crash on Pleasant Grove Road a few minutes later.

Two suspects were taken into custody at the scene. Two other suspects ran off, but were quickly arrested.

Nineteen-year-olds Sean Rutherford and Olquandri McNeal are being held in the Union County Jail. Two juvenile suspects are also in custody.

All four suspects face charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, five counts of second degree kidnapping and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

In addition to recovering several stolen mobile devices, two handguns were seized.

According to police, the Lexus and the two guns had been reported stolen.
