CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A step was taken Tuesday night to bring more than 100 units of affordable housing to uptown.
Mecklenburg County commissioners voted 8-1 to approve $6 million in county dollars to go toward Inlivian’s mixed-income housing development at Eighth and North Tryon streets, the site of the Hall House. Inlivian owns the 2.2-acre site and plans to build 106 affordable-housing units and 247 market-rate apartments there.

Hall House, at 426 N. Tryon St., opened as the Barringer Hotel in 1940 but has been vacant for years. Acquired by the Charlotte Housing Authority (now Inlivian) in the early 1980s, the 12-story building served as public housing for years. In 2009, the building was deemed obsolete and needing substantial renovation work for anyone to live there.
Fulton Meachem, president and CEO of Inlivian, said at Tuesday’s meeting Hall House will be demolished for the new mixed-income project.
