Gunfire near crowd of 200 causes ‘mass panic’ in South End

CHARLOTTE — A crowd of about 200 people panicked over the weekend after someone fired shots from a car nearby, according to a police report. Surveillance video captured the moment it happened.

In the report, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer said someone in a car started shooting near a crowd around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The report says the incident happened outside of 225 Fairwood Avenue, which is the location of RSVP South End, a bar that opened at the end of January.

RSVP said they did not have any involvement in the incident.

The CMPD report says the crowd was sent into “mass panic,” though MEDIC confirmed to Channel 9 they did not treat anyone for injuries.

The surveillance videos shows people running as soon as they hear gunfire.

RSVP posted a statement about the incident Sunday morning, saying they were closed for cleaning Sunday due to their early closure the night prior.

“There were gunshots audible in the neighborhood last night and we closed early in an abundance of caution. Thankfully no one was hurt nor did RSVP have any involvement in the incident,” the statement reads. “Thank you for your concern and cooperation. The safety of our guests and staff are and will always remain our top priority.”

In the video, police arrive at the scene within two minutes.

Bill White works around the corner at CMD Automotive. He’s a lifelong Charlottean and said a shooting in that area is the exception, not the norm.

“I have college-aged daughters that come down here, I never worry about it. Safety is not a concern,” he said. “Anything negative can happen in a city the size of Charlotte. You just have to have your smarts about you when you’re out on the street.”

CMPD told Channel 9 no arrests have been made in the case.
