CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A gun was found at West Charlotte High School Friday morning, a source told Channel 9′s John Paul.

The source said the gun was found in a student’s backpack. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed there was a weapon found on campus.

Channel 9 has reached out to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police for more information, but has not heard back at this point.

Officials have not released the student’s identity or said if any arrests have been made.

“It’s great that they caught it. That means that somebody, some student here felt uncomfortable and was wise enough and not scared enough to tell somebody,” said Trey Miles, who used to teach at West Charlotte.

By Channel 9′s count, this marks the 10th gun found at West Charlotte this school year.

“I would just say there’s ten guns at every other school. They just haven’t been found,” Miles said.

West Charlotte High School sent the follow message to families:

“Good morning, West Charlotte High families,

This is Principal Donevin Hoskins with an important message about a situation that occurred today. A student was found with a weapon on our campus. Law enforcement arrived and an investigation is ongoing. All students and staff are safe, and learning and teaching are continuing. Please speak with your students about the serious consequences of bringing a weapon to school. It is a violation of the law and the CMS Code of Student Conduct to bring any weapon on campus. Thank you for your support of West Charlotte High.”

CMS has been trying to tack the issues of weapons in schools and even spent nearly half a million dollars on 46,000 clear backpacks for high schools. Those haven’t been given out yet.

“I honestly don’t know if there is a solution. I really don’t. What are you going to do. Metal detectors aren’t going to work, this is an open campus,” Miles said.

This is also the 25th gun found on CMS campuses this school year and the first one found in 2022 so far.

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back with wsoctv.com for updates.
