CHARLOTTE — Two juveniles were charged after a gun was found following a large fight at Harding University High School in west Charlotte on Tuesday, according to police.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the fight broke out around 12:30 p.m.
A source told Channel 9 the gun was found in a 15-year-old’s backpack and that the suspect was taken into custody. Channel 9 has reached out to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for more information on the incident but has not heard back.
A mother told Channel 9 education reporter Elsa Gillis that she was nervous and just wanted to see her son after receiving an automated message from the school about the fight and the gun found.
“It’s not safe, you know? We send kids to school to learn, not to learn this. What is going on? Parents, what are we doing at home? What are we teaching our kids?” she said.
According to Channel 9′s records, there have been a total of 16 guns found inside CMS schools this year.
Earlier in November at a Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Earnest Winston said it was unacceptable and that the discovery of firearms reflects broader concerns that everyone in the community must be willing to address.
At that meeting, the district said it is working on a new program to address the concerns.
This is an ongoing investigation and no other information about the two juveniles who were charged has been released.
