Guest, substitute teachers to fill CMS vacancies as 1st day of school approaches

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools still has about 45 vacancies open for bus drivers, officials said.

The district is still trying to fill about 370 teacher vacancies in classrooms, with students returning on Monday.

Licensure is required for some guest-teaching positions, but it advanced degree is not a requirement.

CMS has 409 guest teachers with openings for about 40 more.

“The guest teachers go and report to the same school every day,” said Christine Peugeot, who is the chief human resource officer for CMS. “Those relationships are built and it provides continuity for students as they learn throughout the day and they see the same individuals.”

Guest teachers can make between $150 and $180 a day.

Substitute teachers can receive a critical -shortage bonus of $2,500 and incentives based on how long they have been with the district.

Despite a shortage, CMS officials said they are trying to do all they can do to ensure qualified teachers, who are ready for students are in the classroom.
