City’s plan to bring Greyhound buses to University City revoked due to backlash

CHARLOTTE — Plans to bring Greyhound buses to University City came to a screeching halt.

City council members said they reversed the course due to community backlash.

In an email obtained by Channel 9, Councilmember Renee Johnson called on her colleagues to defer or deny it, adding that she was blindsided by the item.

“I understand the concept of convenience for our students to travel, but the negative aspects that surround Greyhound stations will outweigh the positive,” she wrote.

The interim CATS CEO says new locations will be evaluated and Charlotte City Council will not vote on the item on Monday.

Greyhound buses may soon be coming to the University City area of Charlotte.

Charlotte City Council will vote on Monday to let Greyhound lease space and bus bays at the University City Boulevard parking deck.

The city says Greyhound needs to leave its current spot in Uptown because of future development of the Gateway Station project.

If approved, Greyhound will lease the space in University City for a little over $4,200 per month.

The parking deck has a capacity of about 1,500 spaces.
