Duke Energy is pushing a major rate hike that would force consumers to pay about 14 percent more for power.
However, there is uncertainty over who will decide if consumers pay more.
On Monday Governor Roy Cooper sent a scathing letter demanding lawmakers confirm his nominations for the state’s Utilities Commission.
Three commissioners had their seats expire in June and the governor nominated three replacements, but five months later, only one has been confirmed.
The Utilities Commission will decide early next year whether to increase energy rates.
Some said the uncertainty on the commission isn’t a good thing on the cusp of such an important decision.
“This is going to be one of the largest rate increase requests we’ve ever seen,” said Rep. Rodney Moore (D).
Cooper said the commission is hearing important testimony right now pertaining to the rate hikes.
He called lawmakers' failure to act “disrespectful to the people of North Carolina and inexcusable.”
