GASTONIA, N.C. — The family of a Gaston County paramedic wants people to know how serious COVID-19 is after she died from the virus, officials said in a news release.
Lt. Melanie Massagee, with Gaston County EMS, had been on a ventilator before she died on Sunday. Massagee joined the Bessemer Rescue Squad in 1978. She joined GEMS in 2007 as a volunteer auxiliary member and later joined full-time.

“Melanie was known for her giving personality, dedication to ensuring no one was left unheard or went without,” officials said. “Melanie was a friend to all who knew her. Melanie lived a life of service and commitment to her faith, family, friends, and the patients she served.”
Massagee contracted COVID-19 right before Christmas, according to the release.
“Her family hopes that this tragedy will help others realize how devastating this virus can be and encourages everyone to take all necessary precautions to help prevent such future tragedies,” officials said.
The agency placed a temporary memorial in front of the station at 615 North Highland Street in Gastonia.
Final arrangements have not been made available.
