Channel 9′s Ken Lemon has covered this story since the very beginning. Friday, March 22, marks 2 years since he was killed. Now, investigators believe they know who may be behind the murder. They’re asking the state to help get justice for him and his family.
“There’s not a single day that goes by that I don’t cry, sometimes multiple times a day still,” his mother Christina Michaels told Lemon. “Justice for me would give me some closure. It would give me peace and I feel like I could start to heal.”
There’s currently a reward of $1,000 for information. The only clue they’ve had for two years is that the suspect might be driving a white Dodge Charger like this:
The Gaston County District Attorney Travis Page is petitioning NC Governor Roy Cooper to raise that amount.
McCree’s mother hopes the push for a bigger reward leads to more tips and the answers to who killed her son.
“I’m hoping that somebody will have a change of heart. Something’s gonna happen. I believe that wholeheartedly. I feel it in my spirit,” she said.
Several people were nearby when McCree was shot at, which means there are several potential witnesses. The hope is that raising the reward will catch their attention and push them to come forward.
The letter says investigators have “persons of interest’ with known gang affiliations,” who “are some of the most violent offenders in Gaston County.”
The letter also mentions that at the time of his death, McCree had an 11-month-old son. Michaels says she shows her grandson videos of his father.
“He knows that’s his dad. That’s very important to me,” she said.

The DA told Lemon he’s not sure how long it may take before the Governor’s Office responds to his request. Bessemer City Police Department also sent a letter to the Governor’s Office.
