CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A suspected serial killer from New York owns property in a South Carolina community not far from Charlotte.
Property tax records show Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann bought a lot at the Mirror Lakes II Subdivision in Chester County.
Heuermann was arrested last week and charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He could also face a fourth charge in connection with another victim.
The lot is on Rippling Brooke Drive and was purchased in 2022.
Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the walled-off property on Tuesday and spotted a sign that says, “No warrant, no entry.”
Channel 9′s Tina Terry spent the day in the area speaking with people who say they’ve seen and spoke with Heuermann.
“It’s kinda scary because I live on this street,” said Steve Caston, a neighbor.
Caston told Terry he’s shocked to hear about the charges against Heuermann. Caston said the New York architect planned to retire in Chester County.
He also said Heuermann’s brother lives nearby.
“He kinda stays to himself. I’d see him coming down the road, he’d hold his finger up and wave,” Caston said.
Local authorities say they helped detectives from New York gather evidence in the county.
“The Chester County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Gilgo Beach Task Force in obtaining a court order to seize a vehicle in South Carolina,” said Londa Pringle, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office.
Channel 9 spotted a vehicle with a New York State Police emblem drive away from the sheriff’s office, and it was carrying what appeared to be an SUV.
Suffolk County detectives confirmed to Terry that they recovered a Chevrolet Avalanche in South Carolina.
Neighbors wonder if any other potential evidence will be seized. Chopper 9 Skyzoom spotted piles of debris on the Rippling Brooke Drive property, but there appeared to be at least one structure and a canopy tent that was set up.
“I guess my suspicious mind says what are you trying to hide back there?” Caston said.
