Gastonia street reopens after sinkhole repair

GASTIONA, N.C. — A street in Gastonia reopened Friday afternoon following the repair of a sinkhole.

Around 5:30 a.m., officials received a call about a possible sinkhole on City Church Rd near South New Hope.

The road was then shut down, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

Around 8 a.m., maintenance crews used cameras to inspect the area.

It was then determined that the initial cause of the road collapse seemed to be a weak spot in the ground that eroded away over time.

The area was then reinforced, according to officials.
