GASTONIA, N.C. — A man accused of trying to break into a home was fatally shot in Gastonia, police said.
Officers went to the home, which is along Crescent Lane near Newcastle Road, around 10:45 p.m. Thursday and found 50-year-old Frankie Carl Jones, who had been shot. They found him outside the house.
Jones was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later.
Police said at this point in the investigation, they believe Jones arrived at the home with a gun and was confronted by someone who was in the home. He was then shot by that person, police said.

Now, police are trying to determine if the shooting was a case of self-defense.
Meanwhile, Jones’ friends have questions about what led up to his death.
“Everyone who knew Frankie knew he was a good man,” Christine Dixon said. “A father. A grandfather.”
She said the police narrative doesn’t make sense to her.
“This is not Frankie,” Dixon said. “This will not be his story. We will find out what happened.”
Outside the home Friday, Faherty spotted “no trespassing” signs and two separate cameras.
Investigators said they have already reviewed video and are asking people who live nearby with cameras to come forward.
Neighbors said a person has a right to defend themselves inside their home.
“I stand with it as far as defending your household and your family if there is a threat at your doorstep,” Drew Douglas said.
“You definitely have the right to protect your home if someone is trying to home invade,” Garnell Wilkerson said.
Police said they are trying to determine if Jones knew someone at the home and why he was there. They said they will consult with the district attorney about any possible charges.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
