Gastonia fire displaces 3, causes $50,000 in damage

GASTONIA, N.C. — Three people escaped a Gastonia house fire Saturday morning, Gastonia Fire Department said.

Firefighters arrived around 6:45 a.m. to a fire at a one-story house that had been converted into two apartments.

Smoke and fire were coming from one the front and the side of one of the units on Marietta Street, the Fire Department said.

Two people were inside one of the units and escaped the fire without being injured.

One person inside the second units tried to put out the fire and suffered minor smoke inhalation and burns but was not taken to the hospital.

Twenty firefighters put out the fire in 15 minutes, the department said. The fire caused about $50,000 in damage.

The Red Cross is helping the people affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
