GASTON CO, N.C. — A Gaston County man is $1 million richer after buying a $30 scratch-off ticket at the QSC Food Mart on McAdenville Road in Lowell.

Wilmer Ferrufino of Gastonia arrived at the lottery headquarters on Wednesday to collect his prize.

Ferrufino had to choose between receiving the prize yearly in increments of $50,000 over 20 years or collecting a lump sum of $600,000.

He chose to take it all home. After state and federal tax withholdings, he walked away with $426,069.

The Millionare Maker game launched in March with 30 top prizes of $1 million and 10 prizes of $100,000. Ferrufino is the 24th person to win one of the $1 million prizes.

Ticket sales from scratch-off games raise more than $900 million per year for education.
