GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Soon, pet owners in Gaston County who want to surrender a pet to the animal shelter will need to make an appointment to do it.
Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement has announced it will be implementing appointment-based pet surrender for owners looking to give up their pets to the animal shelter to better manage the pet population and minimize overcrowding in the shelter, which has been a problem in the past.

With this admission process, the shelter hopes it can provide better resources to support and assist residents who are faced with having to surrender a pet and improve the level of service through a more streamlined and organized process.
The agency will begin scheduling pet surrender appointments on Thursday, Aug. 2, between 1 – 3 p.m.
The shelter will continue first come, first serve surrenders on Tuesdays from 1 – 3 p.m. until Aug. 28.
On Tuesday, Sept. 4, the shelter will fully transition to appointment-only surrenders on Tuesday and Thursdays from 1 – 3 p.m.
Anyone faced with having to relinquish a pet can contact Animal Care and Enforcement at 704-922-8677 to discuss scheduling an appointment for pet surrender.
