“Motorists are getting a gift this holiday in the form of relief at the pump,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA Carolinas spokeswoman. “This may be a factor in the boost of travelers choosing to drive this year.”
North Carolina’s $2.26 average price for regular unleaded gasoline is the cheapest it has been since August 2017 and the lowest December price the state has seen since 2016.

South Carolina’s $2.02 average is the lowest it has been since August 2017, as well, and the cheapest December price since 2016.
Monday, gas prices as low as $1.99 were seen at one gas station off Old Monroe Road in Matthews.
The national average is $2.37, six cents less than at this time last year.
Experts say motorists will continue to see gas prices decline through year-end, with gas production on the high side.
