FORT MILL, S.C. — Tanya Ervin-Leonhardt was likely one of the first faces you saw if you went to the Fort Mill Police Department hoping to file a report.
Now, it's her face on the report where she's charged with possession of 12 grams of marijuana, reckless driving, and driving while impaired - all while riding with her police-issued weapon.
Channel 9's Ken Lemon is pushing for more information about Leonhardt and the accusations she's now facing. He'll have an update starting tonight at 5 p.m.
"I can't say what was going on inside of her head," a witness told Channel 9. The volunteer firefighter asked we not use his name.
On June 1, he acted like an officer tracking an aggressive driver on Dallas Cherryville Highway. He didn't know the woman who had tailgated him was a sworn officer who admitted to driving after having a couple of beers.
"Would you have ever guessed that would be a police officer?" we asked.
"No, not by the way she was acting," he answered.
He said Ervin-Leonhardt was weaving through traffic, nearly running people off the road. He and his fiancé followed and called 911.
"Please get Cherryville out here ASAP for her because she is going to end up hitting somebody or killing someone," said the 911 caller. "And I need her arrested. She is drunk off her ---."
"She was yelling out the window as she came at us," he recalled.
He said at one point she turned and started driving at them head on. He swerved to avoid a head-on collison. The situation was do dire that his fiancée - who is five months pregnant - started having labor pains. He said when Cherryville Police arrest Tanya Ervin-Leonhardt she yelled at him.
"We are cops. We'll get out of this," he recalled.
Two days later, she was fired from her job at the Fort Mill Police Department.
"The Fort Mill Police Department does not tolerate unlawful behavior on the part of its officers, nor do we condone inappropriate behavior," said Maj. Bryan Zachary.
