NORTH CAROLINA — Former Charlotte mayor and North Carolina governor Pat McCrory has announced he is seriously considering a run for U.S. Senate in 2022.
This would be for Senator Richard Burr’s seat, who is not running for re-election and retiring in 2022.

Some speculated McCrory might run for governor again. The deadline to enter the race in North Carolina in 2020 is noon Friday to file with the state.
This decision sets up a potential primary battle between McCrory and U.S. Representative Republican Mark Walker, who said he is also considering running for the same race.
After McCrory said he would not challenge current governor Roy Cooper, Walker said he hopes McCrory will join him in supporting Dan Forest for governor.
“I hope Pat McCrory will join me in recognizing Dan Forest is a strong conservative leader and the best candidate to win back the Governor’s mansion in 2020. North Carolina wants fresh candidates who have consistently won their elections.”
McCrory spent much of his career working for Duke Energy. He was the mayor of Charlotte from 1989 to 1995 then, was elected governor in 2012.
He lost his bid for re-election to Cooper.
