GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The son of a former East Gaston High School coach is making a plea on behalf of his father after he was brutally attacked in Belmont in August, and is still in the hospital.

Police said Meredith Scruggs, 70, was brutally beaten in a road rage incident on Main Street. Officers said 37-year-old Kyle Gray, who is a trained MMA fighter, got angry, believing he was cut off while driving.

Gray used his car to block Scruggs and attacked him, causing head injuries and wounds that required multiple surgeries. He was recently moved back to intensive care.

“Frustrating, disgusting, despicable," Meredith’s son, Matt Scruggs, said.

Gray has been out on bond for serious charges. When the Mecklenburg County DA’s office heard about the case, they decided to ask a judge to put him back in jail.

“No one ever thought anyone would be able to do something like this to my dad," Matt said.

Before the road rage incident in Belmont, Gray was already facing charges in Mecklenburg County. Police reports said he stalked a man he knew, broke in to the man’s house, beat him and assaulted him with a knife.

Gray had gotten out on bond for that incident and just a few days after, he was arrested for the road rage incident.

“He absolutely deserves to be behind bars," Matt said.

Matt said his family is learning about other incidents police said Gray was involved in. He said Gray almost went too far with his father.

“He didn’t kill anyone this time and maybe next time he will," Matt said.

A grand jury in Gaston County indicted Gray this week. He is now facing a felony assault charge and waiting for a new court date on that charge.

No other details have been released. This is an ongoing investigation.
