CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 has learned that Charlotte's disgraced former mayor, Patrick Cannon, could be getting out of prison before his January release date.
Cannon is currently serving a 44-month prison sentence at Morgantown Federal Correctional Institution in West Virginia, but legal experts say he could get out early, based on good behavior, and for completing an alcohol treatment program.
If released early, Cannon could serve the rest of the time in a halfway house or home confinement.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons still lists Cannon’s release date as Jan. 25, 2017.
Cannon pleaded guilty to corruption charges in 2014.
Earlier this year, video and audio recordings from an undercover apartment were released, showing the former mayor accepting thousands of dollars to push through development deals.
