UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A former high school booster club treasurer was arrested Wednesday on an embezzlement charge, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The investigation began in November after a report was filed.

Investigators learned that Wayne Hedin, of Waxhaw -- who was the treasurer for the Cuthbertson High School Booster Club -- used at least $5,000 in funds to buy things for himself.

The purchases were made from cash withdrawals and were not authorized by the athletic club, detectives said.

“The offender in this case was in a position of trust and used this position for personal gain,” Sheriff Eddie Cathey said in a news release. “The money stolen, in this case, was meant to support one of our local youth athletics programs. These local programs help to prepare our youth for their futures and serve as a resource to keep kids on the right path. I am glad the Union County Sheriff’s Office was able to investigate this matter and find evidence to hold this person accountable for his actions.”

The investigation is ongoing.
